Shri Hemant Kumar has been appointed as new Member Mechanical, Railway Board & Ex-officio Secretary to the Govt. of India. Prior to this appointment, he was working as General Manager, Western Railway since, 20th November, 2013 and under his dynamic leadership Western Railway attained excellent achievements in various fields.
Shri Kumar is a senior railway officer of 1973 batch of Special Class Railway Apprentice (SCRA) and secured Gold Medal in Mechanical Engineering. He is also a qualified Electrical Engineer. He has done various courses in Management and Management of Operations. He has vast experience of working in Diesel Locomotives in Sheds and Workshops besides working extensively in Diesel Loco Modernization Works as well as designing of modern coaches. Shri Kumar has also served as faculty in his alma mater, IRIMEE in Jamalpur, Bihar.
He has rich and varied experience of working on several key posts in the Ministry of Railways, Eastern Railway and Integral Coach Factory (ICF) etc. During his tenure as Chief Workshop Engineer of Integral Coach Factory, Chennai, the renowned Tourist train Deccan Odyssey was commissioned. As Chief Design Engineer of ICF, he played a pivotal role in the designing of Maharaja Express. The MRVC coaches were made and AC coaches for Kolkata Metro were designed during his tenure. He has also worked on important posts such as Divisional Railway Manager, Madurai. Shri Kumar has widely travelled to USA, Canada, France, Germany, Netherlands, Sri Lanka, Singapore & Malaysia. Prior to his posting as General Manager, Western Railway Shri Kumar has been working on the post of Additional Member (Mechanical Engineering) in Railway Board, New Delhi. He is a prolific writer with avid interest in blogging. His first Hindi poetry book under the title ‘Kah Dhakad Kaviray’ is published recently, which has been widely appreciated by eminent poets, critics and readers.
